Mollie McMillen Willow Bird Workshop

  • The Privett Centre Church Road Alton, England, GU34 United Kingdom (map)

It is a pleasure to have Mollie join us at The Privett Centre. This workshop includes three bird related projects, working with British grown sustainable willow.  The first being a fantastic bird feeder, perfect for hanging fat balls or fruit from a branch in your garden. The second is a beautiful, gracefully shaped bird nesting box, providing a cosy nook for the birds in your garden to raise their young. The third project is a stunning decorative bird, these look fantastic displayed on a wall in your garden.

All projects cover some basic basket making skills, giving you a foundation of techniques if you want to take the craft further. The workshop is suitable for beginners and anyone wanting to weave these lovely items.

Sage and Season will host you for the day providing refreshments and snacks along with a two course lunch. The class will be kept to a maximum of 8 guests to ensure that you have ample support and assistance throughout the day.

Arrive at 9.30am to join us for coffee and something sweet, teaching will commence shortly after and conclude at 4pm. Cost for the day £135.

Mollie McMillen is Yeoman basket maker, working out of her workshop in Privett, Hampshire.  Mollie’s basketry story started in the woods in West Sussex where she trained to be a bushcraft instructor.  Around the open fire, she first learned to use tree barks to make pouches and vessels.  That was her ‘lightbulb’ moment and she knew she would always need to weave!

Over time a broad collection of plant materials formed and many baskets were made with a wide range of plants, fibres and barks.  Mollie is happiest when harvesting, creating connections with plants, adding to her mental maps which cover the landscape and walking home with bunches of foliage under her arm.

Now, Mollie weaves in willow, rush, bark and many mixed plant materials and weaves a wide range of projects and commissions from interior lighting, fencing, coffins and of course plant fibre baskets.

Participants will receive an email with further details of the course prior to the event.
